Thanks for the report, I've committed a fix for the backtrace you were seeing.
bitbake 1.8 performs all depdency calculations in advance so its likely the
messages you're referring to also appear for bitbake 1.6 but during the build
instead of before it.
To have hit these code paths, you've got some kind of circular dependency issue
but perhaps that will be more obvious now it won't backtrace. I'll close this
since the traceback is fixed and we can take up any dependency issue on the
mailing list at least at first.
