short form:  on a fedora 11 preview system with no bitbake anywhere,
i downloaded the 1.8.12 tarball and ran "./setup.py bdist_rpm".  what
i got as a result was a set of 1.8.10 rpm files, probably because the
generated spec file contains the version string of "1.8.10".

  i can test this again shortly if someone needs more detail, but it
should be fairly easy to reproduce.  i tried it a couple times from
scratch and got the same result each time.  i'm guessing that it's
picking up the 1.8.10 version string from the executables in the bin/
directory somehow.
