For mining Bitcoin, you need very specialized hardware (ASIC). It's not possible any more to mine with a general purpose CPU (or GPU), which bitcoinj is targetted at.
Also, mining is concensus critical so there is no way around running Bitcoin Core anyway. I'm not sure how much there would be left for bitcoinj – likely not much.
