To all hopeless emacs addicts out there: >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu May 31 13:37:06 2001 Date: 01 May 2001 10:53:55 -0500 From: John Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Erik Curiel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: a funny thread I got some laughs out of this thread on gnu.emacs.help which I will forward to you (about 8 messages). I guess for this user, the help was more like counseling help than technical support. ***************************************** I find myself afflicted with this disease, whenever I am bored, I start customizing my .emacs, writing defuns, etc. Is there any known cure. Thanks. ***************************************** > I find myself afflicted with this disease, whenever I am bored, I start > customizing my .emacs, writing defuns, etc. Is there any known cure. > Thanks. Nope. --Deepak, http://www.glue.umd.edu/~deego And Gnus said: My soul praises the EMACS and my spirit rejoices in True Editor my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. ********************************************** > I find myself afflicted with this disease, whenever I am bored, I > start customizing my .emacs, writing defuns, etc. Is there any known > cure. The cure is to customize Emacs until you're not bored any more, Stefan **************************************************** > I find myself afflicted with this disease, whenever I am bored, > I start customizing my .emacs, writing defuns, etc. Is there > any known cure. Yes, start using Gnus, and then you have to start spending all of your previously bored time customizing your .gnus, which then only gives you a small amount of time for your .emacs which then means you ain't bored no more. -- Galen Boyer I like to skate on the other side of the ice. It could be worse: you might start customizing Emacs when you have better things to do. __ /\ /\ /\ <> <> David M. Thanks. You may want to consider a function which advises you to stop editing .emacs, such as (defadvice switch-to-buffer (after emacs-customize-please-stop-me activate) "Remind user to stop customizing .emacs" (if (equal (buffer-name) ".emacs") (message "Do you really want to do this?"))) I recommend customizing this to suit your needs, perhaps by keeping a count of the number of times you switch to the buffer and passing increasingly shrill messages as the count increases. Good luck, John Hunter
