Thanks for the info guys.  By some quirk of fate, restarting RPC again
fired the thing up.  As for all the security stuff: I'm going to cross
my fingers and pray.  I've got too many irons on the fire to start
digging into the intricacies of solaris.

It just so happens that the night before all this happened, I gave
Curiel root because he wanted to install some software for me and he
tried to set himself up as a normal user but got lost in the wilds of
solaris, yp and RPC and gave up.  I'm hoping that the RPC failure was
spawned by him and will not rear it's ugly head again.

But when I get bored, I'll check out the RPC crack and the tcp
wrappers you suggest.
