I use <code></code> but there are plenty of similar ways.

If you don't like the funky text formatting your tag of choice gives you,
you can use CSS to override it.

I used span tags with a code css class.  Check out the spans with a code
class after the subhead "Giving functions data to work with:" and the
corresponding html source.
