You should always set CLASSPATH to some reasonable default value, but it shouldn't include browser plug-ins. You should need only to stick a plug-in to /usr/lib/opera/plugins (that's standard, but where ever your opera library actually resides of course) for Opera to pick it up. You should already have the default opera libnpp.so plugin in that directory by default, which I thought was supposed to handle java for you. If it's not recognizing your environment, then you definitely need to set your CLASSPATH.
