Did you try quoting with \C-q in the minibuffer, as in
C-xC-f/jdhC-q@me@nitace:/your/path
I have no idea if it will work, but that is the normal minibuffer
quoting mechanism.
Have you seen tramp http://tramp.sourceforge.net? (Transparent Remote
(file) Access, Multiple Protocol)
It is written by Kai Grossjohanson of gnu.emacs.* fame and supports
remote editing over ssh, among other things. If ange-ftp can't handle
the '@' in the username, perhaps tramp can.
