For all of you kind souls who participated in this extravaganza of
cloning my Windows boot sector, I just want to report that I finally
achieved success. All of the solutions were wise and wonderful, but
in the end it turned out to be something else.

When I partitioned the new disk, I forgot to make it 'active' (MS
fdisk) or 'bootable' (linux fdisk). Hell fire and damnation. It
wasn't till I dir 'fdisk /mbr' and reformatted the whole partition
with the 'format /s' and it still wouldn't boot that I realized
something was amiss.

Note to future self: How to clone a windoze partition

  1) make a vfat partition and MAKE IT BOOTABLE
  2) make an fstab entry
  3) cd /; mkdir win; cp -a /old/win .

Thanks for all the help along the way...
John Hunter
