Yeah, i have to agree with you there. Assuming that any system is secure
because of it's OS or architecture is sure to get you into trouble. It is
the responsibility of the administrator to identify and build the system
around the service(s) it will provide, lock the system down, test, and
then keep it up to date.

I hear this a lot, and i don't necessarily disagree with you, but i'd like
to hear the reasoning behind this. No need to explain the problems with
redhat.
