<<OI!  Broken DVD player over here!  Need recommendations!

Goddamn thread hijackers who don't know the difference between the
MPAA and the RIAA...>>

Sometimes it seems like there isn't much difference.  Imagine if they merged!
"This CD is Rated R.  Children under 17 may only listen to it accompanied by a parent/guardian"

There would be a roomfuls of parents sitting in a room together listening to every album to give it a rating.  Bands could appeal the ratings ("no, really.  That's a very artistic use of the word 'fuck'"), or make a few key changes to their albums to get that much sought-after PG-13 rating.

As for DVD players, there exists a plethora of options.  If you want to defeat Macrovision and Region encoding without losing your warranty, then Apex is your friend, or any of these:

If you don't care about the warranty, want a high quality dvd player and want to defeat Macrovision and RE, then get one of these:

If you want DVD-Audio, then there are a number of very good options, as with SACD (Sony's dvd players are generally very good for their price).  Unfortunately there are very few dvd players that do both (There's an apex player that does both, but does both poorly, I'm told).  If you want everything, then buy this bad boy:

though I'm not sure how easy it is to hack, if you want to play R2 dvds, or if you want to defeat Macrovision.  In fact, I'm sure it would be very hard.

If you want SACD, then there are a few options.  If you want both DVD-Audio and SACD, but don't care about quality, then Apex is your friend again (I believe they have the only player that does both, but that might not be true anymore).  If you don't care about features, and want a top-notch dvd player, then get something with progressive scan, preferably a Sony.
