An ad blocking proxy on your local box can do things like replace the ad
with a transparent gif of the same size.  Just doing it w/ DNS causes a
couple of problems.

One is that Netscape 4.x on unix totally chokes when it can't resolve the
domain for images.

the other is a lot of pages look really broken when the images are just
missing.
