hey all,

I'm starting work on "Libary", the php/mysql/ldap based inter library loan
software so ordinary people can aggregate their personal libraries
into a public library. In a later stage, I intend to implement
pseudonymity and dead drops so opressed people in the third world can
create underground libraries with compartmentalized storage.

So I'm researching the data structure I'll need to implement the card
catalog. One of the things i hope to implement is the ability, when
entering the information of a book you'd like to share, is to just enter
the ISBN/ISSN/LCCN and have the app query a service, using that string to
fill in the data automagically.

Problem is, I need to be able to trust the service I'm querying (I can't
use a government library like library of congress because in future
versions, I shouldn't give that information to an organization with an
intelligence service), I need to be able to parse the results (format of
results shouldn't be a moving target) and I need to be able to depend on
multiple services (failover, no single point of information harvesting).

Does anybody have any suggestions for isbn search services that meet the
above criteria? I suppose I could make it a 2.0 kind of thing and just
move ahead now, but it would be nice to factor in what I'd need to support
this before I design the databases.

tack
