On three of my machines, the tweaks didn't make a difference.  On one,
the harddrive throughput increased 4 fold.  Since that one is my NFS
file server for all the other machines, I'm hoping to see system wide
gains.

Here was the magic command suggested by the article that gave me the
4fold boost:

/sbin/hdparm -X66 -d1 -u1 -m16 -c3 /dev/hda
