Yeah, that's "viral marketing", and it's creepy as all fuck. Kids on the webernets these days are pretty hip to it - there's been a lot of discussion on, say, MetaFilter about it - but the general public is still prime fodder. And this isn't an internet-only phenomenon; these are the same type of people that hire cute chicks to hang out in bars, talking loudly to a "Friend" on a cell phone about some great product, and so on.
