I know the answer is usually, "it depends: test it", but can you give
some ballpark figures on file sizes versus bittorrent benefits. I
assume the answer depends on the capacity and load of the server, but
are their any rules of thumb here?

Are you saying something different here than about file sizes?
It looks like the best solution will be to mirror just the html
(perhaps sans images) of any page referenced on the slashdot front
page. If that page contains a link to another html page, image, or
otherwise small file, just provide a link to the original content from
the mirror. If it contains a link to a large mpg, mp3 etc... serve
the large file from the mirror as a bittorrent file. Thus the mirror
will be limited to serving only small html pages and large bittorrent
files.
