We're looking for someone to run our production system deployments,
both execution and process. Basically I want someone who's a mid to
senior level sysadmin with an interest (and some experience) in
deployments of complex highly available online systems (a la ebay
or amazon or whatever).
It occurred to me that there might be some folks on this list who'd

TITLE: DEPLOYMENT ENGINEERING MANAGER
SUMMARY
Grand Central Communications is seeking a talented Deployment Engineering
Manager. This person will be responsible for leading the design and
optimization of the GC deployment process, for collaborating with
engineering architects and operations and quality assurance professionals to
establish processes, procedures and standards, and for deploying new
features, patches and bug fixes to the Grand Central Web Services Network
(GC WSN).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties
may be assigned.
The ideal candidate will understand the software development and release
process, and will be excited about driving change in the GC WSN release
process. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with staff at
all levels of the organization to achieve results. Responsibilities include
defining and enhancing operational process and procedure; establishing
technical vision and direction; maturing operational standards; and
cultivating solid relationships with internal customers. This job requires
excellent written and verbal communication, prioritization, and analytical
skills.
In this role, the ideal candidate will work closely with
Engineering/Operations/QA personnel to gather and to write detailed
functional requirements, and to develop standard configurations, procedures
and guidelines for building, installing and deploying integrated solutions,
platforms, new features, upgrades and patches within the GC WSN development,
staging, qa and production environments.
The successful candidate will design and create deployment processes and
tools for the GC WSN; Will work with engineering and operations to develop
automated deployment, installation, un-installation, and validation
standards; Will document the process to ensure proper maintenance and
knowledge transfer.
The successful candidate will deploy/upgrade/patch proprietary GC WSN
software and will deploy/upgrade/patch third party software resident within
the service architecture. Includes setting up, configuring and installing
individual system components, and preparing the hardware to support the GC
WSN.
The successful candidate will assist with internal training to ensure all
personnel are proficient in every aspect of the Deployment process.
The ideal candidate will provide systems design and management expertise.
The ideal candidate will provide off-hours coverage via pager/remote access
as necessary in support of the deployment process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

excellent problem-solving skills.

Required Experience:
Successful candidate will have a BS in Computer Science or equivalent
knowledge and experience; experience in product build and deployment and end
user support experience; five to seven years experience supporting
production of a networked, multi-tiered, heterogeneous, 7x24 operations
environment; three to five years administering UNIX systems; three+ years
experience in Web development; three+ years experience in development and
deployment processes and procedures; and experience with the development of
test procedures and custom system/network monitoring solutions. Experience
with the operational support of enterprise LANS and WANS is a plus.
Background should include thorough knowledge and understanding of all layers
from application to physical and reporting, especially traffic specific, AND
expertise in Internet service related products, architecture, backup,
security and monitoring software, system administration, web servers, load
balancers, and WWW applications. Must be familiar with Perl, Java,
JavaScript, HTTP/S, SQL, the Apache Web server, UNIX. Knowledge of UNIX
system administration, packaging, and release tools, including UNIX source
code control, compression, archiving and backup tools is also desired.
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in a computer
related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Subject matter expert in systems design and network
operations.
* Ability to develop a strong knowledge of GC features and
services and how our customers utilize them.
* Ability to provide concise documentation of operational
procedures.
