I know this is random, but I haven't consulted in a while, and I need some
advice on what people actually charge these days. The last time I did any
consulting, shit was hitting the fan but the market was still a few miles
higher up than where we are now so...I don't want to charge too much -- I
don't know what 'too much' is, I just want to be fair...I see jobs in the
paper paying half of what they did in 2001.. so.. Anyway In a nutshell, I
might (undecided) consult in a court case in which I would need to compare
boot loaders of some OS's in different configurartions. My role in all of
it would be basically to do the grunt work of setting up/standardizing the
various hw/sw configs for the expert witnesses (or whatever they're called)
to observe, and work with them. (Actually I have to turn up 1998 era
equipment to work with but thats another story - does anyone have two or
more identical vintage PII boxes or suchlike rotting away somewhere they
wanna sell or get rid of?) Its not at all brain surgery but I have a
feeling it is going to be pretty time-consuming and forensic in
detail/documentation. I'm figuring about 40-50 hours of work overall. The
clients in question are not exactly cash-poor but I dont want to gouge
anyone or seem like a freak... I've asked the other people I'd be working
with but no one will give me any guidance, they all say "I have absolutely
no idea..".. sigh. They just said charge whatever's reasonable, so what's
reasonable these days? I have a pal who charges a $100/hr for consulting on
way easier stuff than that even, but that sound kinda high.. or not?
