You might want to do a 'nice top' instead if your load average is that high...

Your maching is spiraling. A load average of 12 is *VERY*
high and while it could very well be sendmail trying to
process an extremely large amount of mail, I doubt it.
Use "top" and find out what is taking up all the processor
power on your machine.
