I use a combination of mrtg to see total bandwidth used, and ntop to drill down into things a bit more and see host to host breakdowns and by protocol. Also, i find trafshow to be quite a nice simple command line tool.

If you are looking for host to host throughput measurements, you would be better writing something to transfer 1MB(or any size) and time it. NTOP:: http://ntop.ethereal.com/ntop.html MRTG:: Interestingly just discovered the mrtg site has been shut down at: http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/ Quote: "Closed because of "Software-Patents" On September 22nd, 2003 the European Parliament will decide about the legalisation and adoption of so-called "software patents" in Europe. Software Patents are already used by large companies in other countries (like the US) to put competitors out of business. This can lead to the termination of many software projects such as MRTG, at least within Europe." bugger!
