I make a lot of backups onto DVDR these days, and have been
unsatisfied with the encryption options. Several years ago I backed
up Curiel's home dir for him over the network because he didn't have a
burner, and sent him a single encrypted gzipped tar file on a CD
(mongo mistake). The CD was damaged and the whole goddam thing was
lost, with no other backup. Since then I've been planning on writing
a utility to address the problem of making encrypted archives on
external media, and a couple of weeks ago wrote hashtar.

The next thing I'd like to add is an error correcting algorithm, ala
http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/~emin/source_code/py_ecc/index.html.
This would enable recovery even of corrupted files. Also, a GUI
frontend would make it quite handy for windows fools, who could pop in
a CD, enter a password, and have a virtual file folder.

Comments, bugs, suggestions for improvement all welcome,
JDH
