AlterNet.org is a growing, high profile, Webby Award-winning national online magazine of news and culture. We are among the nation�s top progressive media and provide a broad mix of editorial content for more than two million regular readers each month.
We seek a sharp, creative, energetic individual to serve in our top technology position and oversee all aspects of our web presence � from providing technical solutions for editorial needs to maintaining and executing marketing and advertising programs. The position requires taking care of the small details required in maintaining a functioning, interactive web site, as well as assessing new technologies and recommending long-term solutions. The position is also the organization�s liaison to outside vendors, including the web host, contract programmer, email service provider, and statistical services.
The ideal candidate will be both a leader and a collaborator, working as an integral part of the editorial and marketing teams. AlterNet is part of the Independent Media Institute, a non-profit public-interest media company.
Specific areas where we are seeking expertise include:
Web Presence for AlterNet.org - Maintaining a high quality web presence at all times - Maintaining and improving AlterNet�s back end database and CMS - Managing relationships with outside vendors, including hosting, e-mail, and statistics services as well as our contract programmer - Translating editorial needs into technical solutions - Implementing those new features on the site though excellent project management - Managing subscriber lists - Implementing strategies to increase AlterNet�s visibility - Configuring and running statistics software, tracking and reporting statistics
Design and Production - Handling daily editorial design requests include art for stories - Working on larger design projects or coordinating with contract designers
Other important skills: - Ability to assess new technologies and recommend solutions, including multi-media - Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously - Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional web site with proficiency in HTML, Javascript, PHP and Perl - Solid knowledge and experience with major design applications like Photoshop and Illustrator - Experience working with robust database-driven sites, CMSs, server side scripting, etc. - Ability to QA own work - Experience working on media-driven web sites is a plus. - Ability to work productively in a multi-racial, multi-cultural collaborative workplace
Salary is $55-65,000 DOE. Benefits include health, dental, vision, retirement, and four weeks of vacation/year plus regular holidays. IMI is an equal opportunity employer. Interviews begin immediately.
