Hi Raza

You're welcome. But just so's there's no misunderstanding, the information
about the virus was provided by Computer Associates on their website. My own
contribution, in my last email, was limited to providing the URL reference:
http://www.cai.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/descriptions/mtx.htm
However, I will add that I was also caught by that particular virus when others
on the list were getting infected. I also downloaded a copy of Protector Plus
2000. Features are listed at http://www.protectorplus.com/products/w95.htm
This is fully functional software for evaluation for 30 days at no charge.
To be honest I can't now remember which of the two was most effective. But
between them I cleaned up the virus. Since then I've installed Nortons
AntiVirus 2001. One person on an Australian list advised me as follows:
Norton AntiVirus detected and quarantined a virus in a message you sent.
Recipient of the infected attachment: Bruce Tonkin\Inbox
Subject of the message: [auda-competition]
One or more attachments were quarantined.
Attachment METALLICA_SONG.MP3.pif was Quarantined for the following
reasons:
Virus W95.MTX.dr was found.
You'll also note that the Computer Associates website says the MTX virus
monitors your system and will crash your application if it detects that you are
attempting to either access an anti-virus site or send e-mail to an anti-virus
company.
This happened to me when I tried to access these websites after I had been
infected. I was impressed with the cunning of a virus that stops you from
getting help. It seemed to give up when I kept trying and I got the download.
But we do all need to keep our anti-virus software up-to-date !!
Regards
Patrick Corliss
