Maybe it's just me, but I'd go every hour, or three hours... Only if
named.conf has changed, of course.

Very much agreed, unless you have a significant enough load.  At the ISP I
work for, we have three dedicated nameservers, and it works quite well.  We
just added the third to reduce overall load.  But then, we have dialup pools
as well as hundreds of thousands of hosted domains.

Which is why "exchanging" is, IMO, the only way to go

One thing to remember, there is no "primary" and "secondary" in terms of
usage, you effectively round robin.  Primary/Secondary only applies to the
.conf files and behaviour of the servers themselves.
