How do they look up the registrant?

Hi All...

I'm a bit confused about the transfer process. When I place a transfer 
request OpenSRS sends an automated note to the admin contact asking their 
approval and providing a web link. Sensible enough. But how does the 
software know who to send the note to? This onformation is not stored in 
the registry. Is there some dependency on someones whois or on NSI for this?
