Thanks to all of you who have emailed me offering to volunteer. For those of
you who have offered your time this weekend, Sanja is (right now) putting
together our volunteer lists. Sanja will contact you via email or on your
mobile phone number to suggest times and places for you to get together. Our
Phone Banking location is reasonably near Marylebone High Street, so those
of you who want an opportunity to leaflet and call on the same day can do
so.
If you are keen to volunteer this weekend, and have not done so already,
please REPLY to this email with your availability and include a UK mobile
phone number where we can reach you. (Both Sanja and I will see your reply.)

Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have had a Historic night in Denver!
As I write this, we are still waiting for President Clinton and
Vice-presidential Candidate Joe Biden to make their Wednesday night
speeches. But even before these important events, at about 7.15pm Mountain
Time (12.15am London time), Hilary Clinton took the floor and asked the
Convention to suspend the famous roll-call vote of States in order to
nominate Barack Obama by acclamation as the Democratic Nominee for President
of the United States! The footage from Denver is unbelievably emotional, and
people have been touched by the graciousness that Mrs Clinton has
demonstrated this evening.
OK, so NOW we've got a fight on our hands!
As you know, Karin Robinson has been promoted to coordinate campaign
activity throughout the Great Britain, Scandinavia, and South Africa. It is
up to us now to make things work here in London to support Obama. We in
London have the LARGEST SINGLE GROUP of Americans outside of North America
living in our City. Certainly more than 150,000. We need to find them and
persuade them to register to vote, and request their ballots.
To build on the amazing effort that Karin has started, I want to ask as many
of you as possible to focus on two key goals:
1. We need to find as many Americans as possible who live in London, and
give them information to (a) register as voters and (b) request their
ballots.
2. We want to start an local phone bank, to encourage Democrats Abroad
living in the UK to request their ballot and vote.
WHAT WE NEED NOW:
1. To reach Americans, I want to suggest a "High Street Strategy" that gets
us onto high traffic destination locations in London with pamphlets
explaining how to register and vote every weekend until the end of
September. I'm thinking of places like Marylebone High Street, Borough
Market, Kensington High Street, and anyplace else that is a "destination"
for Americans who live in London and want to shop. PLEASE let me know if you
are prepared to volunteer 2 hours of your time to hand out leaflets in these
Central London locations on any weekend between now and end of September.
I'll try to pair you up with other volunteers who will work with you in a
team in a single locations to reach as many Americans as possible.
2. To reach registered Democrats, I need people who are prepared to
volunteer to TELEPHONE those who are registered as Democrats Abroad here in
the UK. We will be phone-banking from our Central London special phoning
location. If you are prepared to dedicate a few hours to telephoning your
fellow Democrats here in the UK, please email to let me know your
availability. We are asking you to use your own UK mobile telephone for this
effort, and we are asking you only to call UK mobile numbers. (When Sanja
and I flew to Ohio to volunteer for the Primary campaign earlier this year,
we found that our local mobile phones were invaluable. This is how campaign
volunteers are doing phone banking back home in the United States.)
I want to thank the very many of you who have already spoken to me about
your volunteer activities. Barack's "improbable campaign" is only possible
because of efforts of each and every one of you. If you have a volunteer
activity that already occupies your time, then I THANK YOU! If you have ANY
time left to dedicate to the Greater London effort, the largest effort
outside the Western Hemisphere, please email me and let me know what you
want to do.
AND FINALLY:
Anyone who is willing to dedicate 3 hours of volunteer time to the campaign
is welcome to joint us on Friday evening to watch a tape-delay version of
Barack Obama's acceptance speech at our special Central London campaign
