>From the editors:
The Pentagon claims today that, despite proof to the contrary, its own
investigation has confirmed that the deadly U.S. airstrike on Afghanistan last
week claimed the lives of only five civilians, while killing 25 "militants."
The claim "starkly contradicts reports by the United Nations and Afghan
officials that the civilian death toll from the bombing was at least 90,"
reports the Washington Post. Of those 90, 60 were reportedly children.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack last week, and according to
one report, "demonstrations erupted in Shindand after Afghan soldiers arrived
to bring aid to the victims' families."
"The troops fired shots into the air and wounded six people after the crowd
threw stones. Protesters said they would continue to demonstrate until 'the
attackers had been brought to justice'."
A million worlds away, in Denver, Afghanistan was still being heralded as "the
right war" by the Democratic party and its candidate, Barack Obama. On the
floor of the convention earlier this week, some Democratic politicians pleaded
ignorance to the deadly attack when questioned by Democracy Now! reporter
Jeremy Scahill -- "I haven't heard about it," said one DNC guest as he quickly
walked away -- while others pledged their support for Obama's plan to send up
to 9,000 troops to Afghanistan. One notable exception is Ohio Representative
Marcy Kaptur. Her response when asked whether she, too, considered Afghanistan
the "right" war: "Ask Russia."

coverage. Thanks for reading.
