--- Begin Message ---YDNC Newsletter 31 August 2008 YES WE CAN! It’s official. Sen. Barack Obama is the democratic nominee for President of the United States. Democrats, history has been made! In our generation, in our lifetime, a major barrier was torn down that will help to build a more perfect union. Our party is now unified and energized to affect change across the country and elect Sen. Obama President of the United States. YES WE HAVE! We must not forget that NC has made and is making history with the candidacies of Bev Perdue for Governor, Kay Hagan for US Senate, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, Ralph Campbell for State Auditor, Rep. Dan Blue as Speaker of the House and Young Democrat State Reps, Ty Harrell and Tricia Cotham! North Carolina helped Barack Obama make history! NC Democrats made history in the 1960’s by helping a young, Massachusetts Senator become President of the Unites States. Young Democrats made history by helping to integrate the YDNC and stand up to the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel for not admitting African Americans. Forty years later, Courtney Crowder would be elected as the first African American President of the Young Democrats of North Carolina.NC made history in the 1980’s by electing Harvey Gantt as the first African American Mayor of Charlotte and again in 1990 and 1996 as the democratic nominee for US Senate. History was made in 1992 with Jim Hunt, serving his third of four terms as Governor of NC. Congressman Mel Watt was one of two African Americans elected to Congress from NC in the 20th Century! North Carolina Democrats, we have always been on the right side of history and brought about the change through progressive ideas/policies that North Carolina needs! It is this history that gives our state a special place in this union and what makes North Carolina Democrats great!Young Democrats have always served as the drivers of North Carolina’s change, so please join the Young, College and Teen Democrats this campaign season as we knock doors and make calls to turn North Carolina Blue!Zack HawkinsPresident, Young Democrats of North Carolina Melissa Price-Vice President Zeb Smathers-YDNC CommitteemanKara Hollingsworth-YDNC Committeewoman Ty Stumpf-YDNC Secretary Matt Cohen-YDNC TreasurerYoung Democrats of North Carolina's1st Annual Gantt-WattReceptionHonoring Congressman Mel Watt & Hon.
