This is an opportunity for Schwarzenegger to rise above the mediocre to poor
record he has attained so far. Does he have enough sense (and guts) to do
it? We shall see.

single payer legislation!
Dear Friends:
Monday, September 8 at 11 a.m. IMPACT invites you to a rally urging Governor
Schwarzenegger to sign the historic SB 840, the nation's first single-payer
universal health care bill. The bill passed its final hurdle, a second
Senate vote for concurrence with the Assembly amendments, yesterday, August
31.
For those wishing to attend and get a seat on Northern CA buses, please RSVP
to CARA (CA Alliance of Retired Americans) at 510-663-4086. Buses to the
Capitol will leave from the sites below with local information numbers:
Berkeley: 9:15 am, Ashby BART; [EMAIL PROTECTED], Berkeley. 510-663-4086
Modesto: 9:00 am, Radisson Hotel, 1612 Sisk Road. 209-823-3890
San Francisco: 8:45 am, St. Mary's Cathedral, 111 [EMAIL PROTECTED];

Vallejo: 9:45 am, Elks Lodge, 2850 Redwood Pkwy; 510-663-4086.
For Sacramento and areas outside, you will have to arrange your own
transportation. Buses are free, but donations can be made and would be much
appreciated. Lunch will be served on the way home.
The rally for support by the Governor will begin on the North Steps of the
Capitol (L Street side) and will focus on getting the Governor's signature.
We will distribute thousands of postcards from us urging him to do the right
thing.
According to author Senator Sheila Kuehl, SB 840 has gained momentum and
support even greater than it had two years ago.
SB 840 guarantees comprehensive health insurance coverage to every
California resident, preserves a patients' right to choose their own doctors
and hospitals, and saves consumers, employers, taxpayers, and state and
local governments millions of dollars in health insurance costs.
"California needs universal health care because the old health care system
is falling apart. SB 840 takes the money we're already spending and uses it
more efficiently to cover everyone and to invest in quality improvements,"
Senator Kuehl stated. "We're wasting a third of our health care dollars on
bureaucracy because insurance companies makes the system too complicated,
premiums are skyrocketing and thousands of Californians are dying every year
because of preventable medical errors. If the Governor again fails to sign
this bill, our health care system will just continue its slide toward
becoming a second world health care system."
"With the passage of SB 840, the Governor has an opportunity to lead the way
out of the health care crisis that is devastating our families and our
economy," said Assemblyman Mark Leno, a principle co-author of the
legislation. "Our current system has driven up the cost of health care to
the point where more than 7 million Californians can't afford coverage. We
must do better."
SB 840 establishes a universal public insurance plan that builds upon
California's existing private health care delivery system. SB 840 provides
comprehensive medical, dental, vision, hospitalization and prescription drug
coverage to every California resident. This broad coverage is made possible
through a streamlined claims and reimbursement system, which has been
repeatedly proven to save billions of dollars in administrative costs and
other wasteful spending. SB 840 also allows California to use its purchasing
power to negotiate bulk rates for prescription drugs and durable medical
equipment, such as wheelchairs.
This bill is supported by a growing network of over 200 organizations across
the state representing tens of thousands of nurses, doctors, and teachers;
counties, cities and school districts; hospitals and businesses; school
employees and medical and health profession students; community
organizations and others. For a complete list visit www.senate.ca.gov/kuehl.
Single payer health care is no longer just a remote possibility. SB 840 has
been endorsed by several significant County Boards of Supervisors. It may
come as a surprise, however, to learn that the federal counterpart to SB
840, HR 676, was endorsed earlier this summer by the US Conference of Mayors
at their annual meeting. Not one mainstream news media outlet made note of
that historic step forward. To see the resolution, go to:

Please join us for this important rally September 8 at the CA State Capitol!
Get on board for single payer health care!
Thank you!
