>From the editors:
Greetings from St. Paul, Minnesota, where the atmosphere, sadly, is largely
captured by the headlines below. As Republicans bask in corporate-sponsored
comfort at the RNC and the media obsess over the latest Sarah Palin revelation,
outside on the streets, police wear riot gear and drive in packs of unmarked
vans, as helicopters hover overhead. For a place where protests are
overwhelmingly peaceful, it feels like a city on lockdown.
Among the hundreds of arrests, a number of media workers have faced brutal
treatment by the police. By now, it seems there is no one who hasn't heard
about the arrest of Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman Monday night. Goodman was
manhandled and handcuffed as she tried to keep two of her producers, Nicole
Salazar and Sharif Abdel Kouddous -- both of whom were bloodied -- from being
arrested by St. Paul police. Yesterday on the show, the three discussed their
unlawful arrest -- and the arrest of other journalists, including an AP
photographer, and a reporter for the New York Post, who, somewhat amusingly,
yelled, "For Christ's sake, it's a Republican paper!" to no avail. Watch the
segment here.
Finally, some good news: Yesterday came word that Sami Al-Arian, the
Palestinian university professor who has been persecuted by the Bush
administration for years, and whose case AlterNet has long followed, was just
freed on bond, after more than five years in federal custody. Al-Arian is still
awaiting trial on contempt charges, but this marks a major breakthrough in a
case that, since day one, has been a grotesque miscarriage of justice and a
symbol of the racist excesses of the so-called War on Terror. Read an interview
with Al-Arian's daughter, Laila, here.
