Thanks, Doug -- I sent the following to the Governor. Note my ending
comment. I copied your entire letter (except for the part in parentheses
:-)). I might become a supporter of his if he signs SB 840. Not too likely.
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger, I am writing to add my support for the
National Popular Vote Bill and to request your signature to enact it into
law in the State of California. In addition to the reasons stated by my
friend Doug Holmes (whose letter I have copied below), I firmly believe that
we should do what we can to prevent another travesty of democracy where a
person if elected to federal office when he or she has received a larger
number of votes than their opponent. In other words, to maje the Electoral
College work in a more democratic way and preserve the founders' intent that
the winner of a federal election should be the person who gets the most
votes. Thank you for your attention to this important bill and for your
leadership in California. Rev. Rick Mitchell 861 Litwin Drive Concord, CA
94518 925-687-3976 NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE BILL "Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
Please sign the National Popular Vote Bill and give California a voice in
the Electoral College in future elections. We cannot get rid of the
Electoral College, but we can do our part to make it another one of those
silly anachronisms in our society and system of governance that are moot. If
California moves to throw its electoral vote for the next President to
whichever candidate wins the national popular vote, they will have to come
to California to campaign for our millions of votes. They will spend a lot
of money here and boost our economy. There is an historic pattern of the
national economy and with it California's economy tanking in the last part
of every presidential election year -- I guess because the markets cannot
see clearly or even guess what will be the outcome. This is our chance to
bring more spending into our economy and help reduce the temporary impact
the election has on our economy. This is one item more important to our
state than the budget. I hope you will sign it. Sincerely, Douglas Holmes"
PS -- I have copied this message and I approve it wholeheartedly :-)) --
