Dear Nation Friend:
"I'm John McCain, and I approve this message..."
As we've now seen, there's pretty much nothing John McCain won't approve in his
desperation to win the presidency:
* surrounding himself with the sleaziest operatives, from the Swift Boat
attackers to Karl Rove apparatchniks;
* happily endorsing every lying accusation they could come up with against
Barack Obama: from "Obama's new taxes could break your family budget" to the
infamous "Obama's one accomplishment: legislation to teach sex education to
kindergartners;"
* choosing a wing-nut vice-presidential nominee to distract voters from his
own corroded barrel of ideas.
With a track record like that, what are the chances he has something dirtier up
his sleeve?
Particularly now, as he faces plunging poll numbers with his inept reaction to
the nation's economic meltdown?

Can you believe he'd hesitate a moment from pulling a last-minute "October
surprise" with the help of the low-profile George W. Bush, desperate to keep a
Republican ally in the White house to provide legal cover when the
investigations into his administration really get rolling.
Think about the possibilities. A sudden perceived security "crisis." A
purported threat, nuclear or otherwise, from some "rogue" regime?
We at The Nation believe there's every reason in the world to be prepared for
an October -- or early November -- "surprise."
That means mobilizing our own national and international resources to watch for
early warning signs . . . and, when it happens, being ready to respond with
something other than the "official voices" from Camp David and Camp McCain.
