Dear Friend,
I wrote to you a couple weeks ago with a problem.
The Nation was facing a financial crisis at exactly the moment that we needed
to reach as many people as possible with our reporting on Election '08.
I asked for your help, and you answered my call with amazing generosity. It's
incredibly moving to know that The Nation can count on you in such a difficult
time.
For your incredible support, I'd just like to say thank you -- and let you know
just what kinds of reporting your readership and support is keeping on our
pages?
Our election coverage.
First of all, of course, there is the election. Your help has sustained our
reporting on Election '08 and enabled us to reach folks we wouldn't have
otherwise.
As you read through the election coverage we're producing, I think you'll share
my belief that our democracy finds itself at a crossroads. The stakes and
choice in this upcoming election could not be clearer. Throughout this
campaign, The Nation has reported on the rise of a small d-democratic movement
that has the potential to push those inside the Beltway to make real change.
Of course, we know that -- if past elections have taught us anything -- we have
to be on guard for a late October Surprise, particularly with Republicans
lashing out now that their numbers are trailing.
Talk of investigating "anti-American" activities, sinister robocalls and
charges that "liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve
and believe in God" (this from North Carolina Republican Congressman Robin
Hayes at a McCain rally last week) are divisive, diversionary and destructive.
We know the best defense is to expose these toxic charges and incendiary smears
and we are on the frontlines, working hard to get these stories out in the open
and to you.
Reporting on the economic crisis.
The Nation was covering the deregulatory frenzy and Gilded Age inequality long
before this crisis hit our economy. Unfortunately the financial collapse has
validated our worst scenarios. In our reporting, we will never lose sight of
the human pain millions are living through -- homes foreclosed, pensions
ravaged. But we are also seizing the political opening this crisis has provided
to raise tough and necessary questions about -- and alternatives to -- the
fundamentalist free market ideology our nation's leaders have been peddling for
so long.
Nation writers and experts who predicted the downturn are now filling our pages
and website with smart and visionary ideas and recommendations for how to
recover from this crisis.
A look at the progressive movement's future.
Over the past eight years, we've grown used to being in a defensive crouch as
we have fought for a more just and peaceful country. We've grown accustomed to
waging worthy battles -- winning a few, losing too many. Today, we are on the
cusp of an election that has broken registration records and mobilized millions
of new voters -- especially young people and minorities. It will be a vital
step toward building a more inclusive, sustainable society and world. At the
same time, we understand that voting is only the first step on the longer road
to improving our communities and reengaging the world as a true partner.
Despite my still lingering uncertainty about the outcome of the election and
anxiety about our economic future, I breathe a little easier knowing that when
this magazine goes to print, it has the force of thousands of readers and
supporters like you behind it. You've helped us shine in a dark hour, and we'll
keep charging full steam ahead.
I'm confident that with you at our side, no matter what happens, The Nation
will continue in the coming critical months to hold elected officials to their
campaign promises and keep mainstream corporate media accountable.
Thank you so much.
