Just a few weeks after Barack Obama's election to become the 44th president
of the United States, Opa-locka wants its share of history by naming a
street after the nation's first black president.
Perviz Avenue, which runs north-south from Oriental Boulevard (Northwest
151st Street) to Ali Baba Avenue, soon will also be known as Barack Obama
Avenue.
Dividing a quiet and friendly residential neighborhood, Perviz Avenue is
parallel to the historical City Hall, which is preserved as a historic site
and used by elected officials for political business.
Perviz Avenue is one of the city's original streets. The thoroughfare
includes some of its most popular destinations, such as the city's public
library, the administrative municipal complex and Opa-locka United Methodist
Church.
The Opa-locka City Commission voted on the name change consideration at the
Nov. 12 meeting. The idea was proposed by former Vice Mayor Dorothy Johnson,
who said no other city in Florida has yet named a street after the next
president.
In December the commission will vote again to finalize the approval,
according to city officials.
Johnson plans on dedicating the street next February in observance of
President's Day.
