Jon Ostendorff, Asheville Citizen-Times - A federal jury awarded $50,000 to an African-American construction worker who says he endured racial slurs from his co-workers who once placed a rope around his neck. Kitchen was hired as a worker for Pisgah Forest-based Farrell Log Structures and lasted until he ran from a job site that summer after employees threatened to hang him, Kitchen's attorney said. Kitchen, 29, made audio recordings of the slurs and those were played during trial. "I was shocked that it happened," he said Wednesday. "Now even looking back, I am still shocked that it happened. I still have nightmares about it."
