Nov. 22, 1945 He was not even allowed to play wide receiver in High School in
1978..instead forced to play at tight end...no scholarship offers, not one
phone call, went to saddleback Junior college, then walked on at Fresno
State....then made the Kansas city Chiefs as a un drafted rookie........not
only made the team, but eventually ended up starting and ended up being a NFL
Record holder.....for 4 years...most yards received by a player in a
game.......was cut off the 9th grade track team, was over shadowed by his
highly
athletic sister..Faye Paige......played 10 years in the NFL.........played
pop warner on a very terrible Westside Team called the Bears...where the
habitually lost to the south bay teams from Carson,Inglewood and Hawthorne.
Although at 11 years old he was a defense tackle and in a overtime thriller
against Golden West...Coach Gwynn (yes Tony Gwynn's dad) put him in at
running back to get the tough yards for an attempted first down...(he was
tackled short of the 50 yard line a really weird tie breaker rule) the team
lost
to Golden West..but that Team had Randall Morris a future NFL Player at
Running back, Charles Clinton a future NFL player at running back, and 3 or 4
more running backs and receivers and defensive players that went on to
either Division 1 scholarships or High School stars.....this is a REAL
underdog story.
