*The New Issue of Left Turn is coming out next week!*

Highlights In This Issue

This issue of Left Turn features first-hand views of both turmoil and
resistance, setting the record straight with grassroots perspectives on
struggles around the world.

The articles in our feature section on indigenous struggles in Latin America
show that death and displacement has long been a part of everyday life in
Latin America for the indigenous. However, as Francesca Fiorentini points
out in the introduction to the section, "in the long uphill battle for
recognition, respect, autonomy, and territory, a peak seems to have
arisen." This sense of possibility in the face of adversity is seen in
Simon Sedillo's and Andrew Willis Garces's articles on Mexico's and
Colombia's indigenous struggles, respectively.

This spring the Sri Lankan military launched a final offensive against the
Tamil Tigers, killing and displacing thousands. Prachi Patankar's interview
with Sri Lankan Tamil activist Ahilan Kadirgamar and the accompanying
historical timeline give both a deeper and a different understanding of the
conflict.

Sahar Shafqat recounts how Pakistani lawyers and their allies recently
spearheaded a militant, mass-based movement which reinstated the judiciary
in the face of serious state repression.

In Latin America, despite many years of US support for death squads and the
right wing, the FMLN won the presidential elections in March. Alexis
Stoumbelis describes the significance of this victory and the role US based
solidarity activists played in it.

Left Turn also continues to highlight struggles from the US. Facilitated by
Harmony Goldberg, Left Strategy from the Grassroots is a roundtable
discussion on the state and direction of the left by 5 organizers and
revolutionaries.

In From Bart to Swat Rachel Herzing and Isaac Ontiveros take a critical look
at the organizing around Oscar Grant and anti-policing organizing in the Bay
Area.

Transitions in the Editorial Collective

With this issue, two members of the Left Turn editorial collective who have
contributed richly to the magazine over the years are transitioning to other
roles. Rachel Herzing, a prison abolition organizer who has brought vital
insight to the magazine through sections on the prison industrial complex
and the Black Left, among many other topics, is stepping down from the
collective.

Also moving on is reviews editor Sheri Whatley, who has been with Left Turn
since the first issue, and has nurtured and developed the reviews section
into the integral part of the magazine it is today. But don't say goodbye -
although they are leaving the editorial collective, both Sheri and Rachel
will continue to contribute to the magazine.

Also with this issue, we welcome Vasudha Desikan and Tej Nagaraja to the
editorial collective. Both have been working with the magazine in different
capacities for several years, but are now officially joining the editorial
collective. Tej is Left Turn's new reviews editor and Vasudha is the new art
director. We believe their excellent work has already brought the magazine
to new levels.

With their contribution and support from our readers, we push on through the
horrific and the hopeful, carving a space for journalism from and for the
grassroots.

In solidarity,
Left Turn Editorial Collective
