In Nguni and Damara flocks colour pattern like those of Barbados Blackbelly are common.
Fat tail sheep are much easier to transport on slave ships, as very little feed and water is needed. I don't believe that thin tail breeds was first choice for long travel. Working for a few years with African tribal sheep, the Damara,Nguni and Cameroun may have been in combination the back ground of the African roots of our BB. Anyhow, what me surprised the most, was the gain of the African tribal sheep. They outperformed Dorper in very short time, in the first 3 months of live. I'm not out to do any marketing , never sold and Damara or other tribal sheep. But I know that no one of all the wool breed sheep I know, would have a part of the capacity to gain as fast weight with poor feed as the african tribal sheep. Under good growing grass they are ready to slaughter with hin two months. May have a look at the page I send here.The kind of sheep are so hard,that if by accident the hind legs of a lambs are cut of, they walk on the front leg and keeping upright the hind.
