The contents of your Xsession file may be of some help in tracking what GDM
attempts to execute when you chose this option.

There should not be a need for a bin directory in your home directory.  Many
people use a .xinitrc file to control what is launched when X is started (ie
blackbox).  However this can also be configured on a more system wide basis
if desired.
