You are right i start using blackbox for its rude and FAST ui.
Maybe someone on the list can do a "unofficial alpha-blending patch".
When i say  alpha-blending, i say hardware accelerated translucency via
Xrender extension ( a very young creature, i know ).

Maybe you can decide to close only the last submenu when a checkable
items are selected.
