In X, copying text works by highlighting the text with the mouse, and
then pasting it somewhere else. When you paste, whatever text is selected
is what gets pasted. Some applications, like those that use QT (like Opera)
or GTK+ may not work exactly the same.
To use your example, to copy text from Opera, I would highlight it by
pressing the left button and dragging the mouse to the end of the text.
Then I would switch to the xterm and press the middle button to insert
the text. It works the other way around too.
