bbkeys has been re-written to use NET_WM.  it also uses blackbox's lib.  it's in the regular bbkeys module on sourceforge, if you want it.  I've been using it only (instead of epist) for the last month or so.  There are a couple of buglets still, but they only pop up once every couple of weeks and I've not yet had a chance to look into them.  I've been using the new bbkeys with kwin too (disabled all of kde's keybindings), and it works perfectly.
