Personally I wouldn't have much of a problem with it running of screen, so long as it started on the left edge. In that case I would be able to see the majority of the title. However I do like the idea of truncating the middle part. I think it might look better. Could be useful if you have two long titles which are the same except for the last few words too.
As for the orginal subject of this thread, I did play with the source code, and found a solution to the numlock problem. I created a patch which can be obtained at:
