I'm running XOrg's X11R6.8; when using blackbox 0.65, bbpager 0.3.1 and
bbkeys 0.8.6, I got the following results:
- blackbox works just fin
- bbkeys gives me a "Cannot connect to window manager" warning (error?);
certain commands (left/right/up/down workspace, Next/Prev Window)
don't work; things like Workspace1-8 work though
- bbpager segfaults
On the eye candy side, the drop shadow and translucency effects just
work when enabling the Composite extension in xorg.conf and
a) starting'xcompmgr -c' for shadows and
b) running the transset tool for the translucency.
It is unbearably slow on my 1.4 GHz P4 though; with shadows enabled,
it takes about 3 seconds for an aterm window to be redrawn at the new
position when moving it.
With blackbox 0.70beta2 and bbkeys 0.9.0beta2, the situation is better
now: bbkeys works just fine :-). It's still not usable because it's so
slow on my machine.
I used the following guide to get started (I'm not on gentoo, so don't
worry, it's not gentoo specific):

Finally a few screenshots (with blackbox 0.70beta2):

To summarize, the eye candy just works, bbkeys and bbpager for blackbox
0.65 had some problems with X11R6.8, bbkeys 0.9.0beta2 works fine. And
for me, it's too slow to work with, but then, there are far more
powerful machines around :-).
HTH,
Regards, Johannes
