New beta versions of blackbox use fontconfig. I am guessing that you don't
have any fontconfig cache pregenerated so it is doing that when you start
it.

New versions of fontconfig have a fc-cache man page.

You may want to run "fc-cache -v". If done as root this will build the
system-wide font cache.
