Well, if you're using 0.53 I made a patch for this a while back. It's at
http://shoebox.net/patches.html, under the "intuitive focus" heading. It
adds a few more things, as well. The patch is not perfect (I need to fix it
to give focus to the uppermost window when a window is unmapped; right now
it gives it to the last focused window, which is not necessarily uppermost),
and has yet to be ported to 0.60, but I've been using it for quite some time
and it makes things a -lot- easier.
