well. i had to change my video card some hours ago and therefore
 tested out that old 'startx' command from the console. and guess
 what happened - all the fonts were back to normal again. this
 seems to be an issue with gnome (actually gdm) - i've seen those
 fonts in gnome-apps too. and i know what made root so special,
 that his fonts didn't screw up - he has lang set to en, all the
 other accounts (and the new ones too, as defined in /etc/skel)
 are having et_EE, which stands for estonian. so this must really
 have soemthing to do with the nls stuff. should i translate 
 blackbox to estonian? =)
