I also have the problem described below. The offending app for me is xmms.
My problems began when I updated to a more recent version of xmms. It is not
bb specific, becuase I had that problem running Kde.
I always thought it was becuase the app used up all my ram.
I didn't think xmms uses a private colormap,
the colors are black, blue and white,
