Hello,

I am running linuxppc R5 in default modus (nothing upgraded) on a stand alone
MacG3 computer with three users on it: root, wlff(private), 5hamers(business).
I ran into blackbox and I tried to install it. I followed the readme
instructions
and read the blackbox user guide. Here is what I did as root:

# cd /usr/local
# mkdir share
# cd /usr/local/share
# mkdir Blackbox
# cd Blackbox
# mkdir menu styles
# cp /exch/blackbox-0.51.3.1.tar.gz /usr/local/share/Blackbox
# cd /usr/local/share/Blackbox
# tar -zxvf blackbox-0.51.3.1.tar.gz
# cd /blackbox-0.51.3.1
# ./configure
  (wait for prompt return)
# make
  (wait for promp return)
# su -c 'make install'
  (wait for prompt return)

Now, going into dir Blackbox I find this:

[wlff@XXX wlff]$ cd /usr/local/share/Blackbox
[wlff@XXX Blackbox]$ ls
blackbox-0.51.3.1 menu styles
[wlff@XXX Blackbox]$ cd blackbox-0.51.3.1
[wlff@XXX blackbox-0.51.3.1]$ ls
AUTHORS Makefile config.cache data util
COPYING Makefile.am config.h install-sh version.h
ChangeLog Makefile.in config.h.in missing version.h.in
ChangeLog-0.40.x NEWS config.log mkinstalldirs
ChangeLog-0.50.x README config.status src
GPL-2.0 TODO configure stamp-h
INSTALL aclocal.m4 configure.in stamp-h.in

As I understand the bb-user guide it should be possible to start
blackbox from
this point, since beyond it seems merely configuration to user taste.
Is this a correct assumption?
Anticipating yes, I created a ~/.blackbox directory with subdirectories
Backgrounds Menu and Styles for future user configuration and copied the sample
menu file to 'Menu'.

Then I tried to start blackbox from /usr/local/share/Blackbox/blackbox-0.51.3.1
However, OS startup is at runlevel 5 for all users, including root. I
seem to
have a little problem starting X from runlevel 3 which I have to fix
yet.
So if I wanted to start blackbox this way I couldn't tell if it doesn't
work
because of this startx-problem or me doing something wrong.

I tried to make blackbox the default window manager in my private home
directory.
A recent posting on linuxppc mailing list instructed how to make KDE
default
window manager. I created a ~/.xsession directory with one file just
containing
'exec /user/local/share/Blackbox/blackbox-0.51.3.1', logged out but couldn't
login anymore. I did not create a path for blackbox anywhere at any time
in the
process since the line following 'exec' looks like one to me.

If I am on the right track sofar, how would I proceed from hereon?
I am trying to hack my way into Linux (and computers in general) for
almost
a year now, and all I can say is I can handle the Redmond/Cupertino-button-
stuff but Linux is not easy. I don't want to quit on blackbox so please help!
