Hmm, funny.  I'm on a Slack 7.1 system with the most recent version
available from alug.org, and my memory use has gone down significantly
since my last system (slack 7.0 with 0.60.1, iirc).  Maybe there was
a memory leak in the old version of xfree that only blackbox triggers?
